Meet the Editor

Jennifer Tovar, Editor and Owner

I’ve always loved getting lost in a good book and being transported to new worlds through the magic of storytelling. My first book obsession was The Little House on the Prairie series, and from that moment on, I was hooked. My dream job? Getting paid to read. Becoming an editor made that dream a reality.

I come from a long and proud line of military wives. Raised as an Army Brat, I know all too well the life of packing up and moving to the next new adventure. But after years of bouncing from place to place, I’ve finally put down roots in the Texas Panhandle, where I live with my husband, two daughters, and our ever-vocal dog, Mrs. Barks-a-lot.

Originally operating under the name Gypsy Heart Editing, I rebranded in 2021 to Desert Mystic Literary Editing to better reflect my evolving mission and focus on delivering personalized, high-quality editing services.

Beyond my love of books (and my steady book-a-day habit), I have a quick wit, an unhealthy love of puns—the cornier, the better—and an ever-growing collection of novelty mugs. When I’m not editing, you’ll likely find me indulging in my latest diamond art project.

My Editing Philosophy

I approach editing from a reader’s perspective first, immersing myself in your story as your audience would. This allows me to identify what’s working—what grips me, what makes me feel, and what keeps me turning the pages. Once I understand the heart of your story, I shift into my editorial mindset, focusing on structure, clarity, and technical refinements that will strengthen your writing without losing its essence.

I believe that editing isn’t just about fixing mistakes—it’s about elevating your story while preserving your unique voice. That’s why I highlight both the impactful moments and the areas that could use improvement. My feedback isn’t just a list of what needs to change; it’s a conversation. I want you to see what’s already working, not just what needs revision.

I also like to bring personality and humor into my editorial notes. Writing is an emotional process, and revisions shouldn’t have to feel so daunting. My goal is to make the editing process engaging, insightful, and maybe even a little fun—while always keeping my in-line edits true to your voice as an author.

Why do I Love to Edit?

I love being able to completely immerse myself and get lost in a story. I know how much work goes into pouring out your heart and creativity into your writing and I want to help you make the absolute most of it. I take pride in my work as an editor and I love being able to help play a part in perfecting your masterpiece.
